Dean Kathleen Canning earned her PhD in history at Johns Hopkins and master’s degree at the Karl-Ruprechts-Universitat Heidelberg. She is a scholar of German and European history of democracy and citizenship, gender and family, state, labor and social movements in the late 19th and 20th centuries. She has held research fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Stanford University Humanities Center, the University of Freiburg’s Advanced Study Center and the University of Michigan’s Institute for the Humanities.

Rachel Tolbert Kimbro (Ph.D., 2005, Princeton University) is the Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Rice University and Professor of Sociology. Dr. Kimbro earned her M.A. in Sociology at Princeton and her B.A. in Sociology and Policy Studies at Rice. Following her doctoral work at Princeton, Dr. Kimbro was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholar at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where she received interdisciplinary training in population health.

Thomas Killian


Thomas C. Killian
Dean, Wiess School of Natural Sciences
Professor, Physics and Astronomy


Thomas Killian is Dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University. He received his undergraduate degree in physics in 1991 from Harvard University and then attended Cambridge University on a Marshall Scholarship, where he received an MPhil in physical chemistry in 1993. Killian earned his PhD in atomic physics in 1999 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for studies of ultracold atomic gases.
